Lately I am noticing the subtleties of a summer sunrise. I mean not even I can rise early enough in June and July to walk before the sun is fully risen, no matter what advantage that would give me in terms of temperature and crowded sidewalks.  In the heat of the past month here in DC, the word subtleties would not have seemed to apply to the way I experienced the sun on my morning race to get my exercise in while being outside was still mildly possible. Resilience, pandemic style…

Saturday. Along the Anacostia. Honestly, these are words I never thought I would speak so often. But today as I greeted the hazy sunrise all I could think about was resilience. The incredible resilience of nature that you see here. Geese. Fish. Cormorants. And their human partners in creation...like Living Classrooms. Even 5 years ago this was not true. All of this before me reminds me of the times in my own life when I was resilient. Not stubborn. Not willful, but resilient...which I define as strength blended with surrender and cooperation. It felt very risky to go walk along the river; in some places the sidewalks were narrow...it required leaving the "safe" zone that we had established for ourselves.
